JUPITER, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – Many men waiting in the maternity ward of a hospital are under a significant amount of stress. Most of them do not resort to drugs for relief, however.
Local resident David Bastin, 28, was arrested by Marin County officials when he was caught smoking marijuana after his girlfriend had been admitted to the delivery and infant unit of Martin Medical Center in Stuart.
According to the Off the Beat blog of the TC Palm, a nurse working in that unit of the hospital smelled “a strong odor of cannabis” emanating from the room in which Bastin’s girlfriend was staying.
A police report obtained by the paper noted that, upon making contact with Bastin, one of the responding officers asked him to “make this simple and hand [him] the cannabis.”
“The defendant reached in his right pocket and handed [the officer] a black oblong device that the defendant called a vaporizer,” the arrest affidavit indicated. “[The officer] opened the device and there was a green leafy substance that I know from my training and experience to be raw cannabis.”
After his arrest, Bastin became less cooperative with officers, reportedly resorting to swearing at officers and struggling against further search of his person.
Bastin was charged with possession of cannabis under 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia, the paper learned. He was held in the Marin County jail in lieu of a $1,500 bond.
